IP—The Institute of the Present announces the 2024 edition of COLLEGIUM—a layer of action within its educational programme centred on the artists’ engagement with pedagogy and other forms of reflection upon the process of working. With each edition conceived in the form of an intensive workshop for professionals from Romania and the countries of Eastern Europe and the Balkans, COLLEGIUM puts forward a knowledge-resource space, advocating for a confrontational field featuring a variety of visual and performative practices. The 2024 COLLEGIUM masterclass is centred on book design following the Institute’s interest in a continued support of professionals towards developing new routes of visual representation and readership in the field of art publishing in connection with its editorial programme, P+4 Publications.

Till Gathmann: Spaces of Transposition
“This workshop focuses on questions of space, the book, and the letterform. The book as a medium can be understood as place in which different conceptions of space exist in relation to each other. One could argue it begins with an opening and ends with a closure. Most books are designed to contain letterforms. Letterforms in themselves are both simple and manyfold in gestalt [shape, form]. They are in this world to create connections, but to do so they need to have a life of their own. Their demand for space communicates with the spatial conceptions of the book, though they really do not rely on it.

The workshop intends to look out for letterforms—examine, communicate, and play with them by exposing them to different spatial conditions, the last of which could be a book.

Those spatial conditions I call ‘spaces of transposition,’ states of the object/subject we are concerned with, in spaces in which we can observe its metamorphosis. Often it seems, the simpler the questions, all the more complex the answers.”—Till Gathmann

The workshop includes theoretical and practical sessions on the questions of space, typography and composition, letterforms, transposition, book dramaturgy and production.

TILL GATHMANN is a typographer, book designer, and writer based in Berlin. He specialised in conceptual collaborations to develop books with artists. He developed the design for the Kyiv Biennial 2015, the 11th Berlin Biennale, and the photo magazine Camera Austria. His writing is concerned with the reconstruction of the life and theoretical work of Alfred Kallir, a self-taught scholar of what he called the “psychogenetic sources of the alphabet.” www.tillgathmann.org
